Travelling is fun, even when you are so unlucky with the weather this year.
We have spent a week in the lovely Wigtownshire area of Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway. If one loves nature, soft hills, the beautiful Irish Sea, the great hospitality and a lot of outdoor activity offers, this is the place to go! I would recommend this place to many holidaymakers who, over the years, got tired of endlessly baking in the sun, noisy hotels, overpriced outdoor activities and restaurants, which more than often end in desperate search for the next toilet because of different hygiene standards from their own countries.
We had a lot of time for leisure and, of course, exploring the pubs and restaurants of the area! The local ceilidhs including local craft shows during July and August are what I like most.
Of course, one has to eat! What would a holiday be without trying the traditional foods of the areas! One of the local restaurants, a treasure when it comes to food and ambience, is
HENRYS Bay House in Stranraer, right by the Irish Sea.
The menu offers, of course, fresh seafood in all variations, all fresh from the early morning catch as assured by the owner, Chef John Henry. Light starters, arranged immaculately and colourful on decorative plates. The main courses included chicken in different variations, local lamb and delicious seafood. My starter had been Tattie and Leek Soup (a Scottish speciality) and my main course was roasted chicken stuffed with haggis, roast potatoes and seasonal veg. The pudding just was to die for: pannacotta with raspberry sauce.
Remarkable was, we had a complimentary dish before the meal with a jug of fresh Scottish water, freshly baked bread and butter! Plenty of choices of excellent wines (not the 'cheap stuff' but for a reasonable price here)...
My experience at HENRYS Bay House in one sentence: First class ambience, spotlessly clean, welcoming, friendly and professional service, excellent food for reasonable prices. It certainly shows that Chef John Henry has gathered much experience and know how in one of the top class hotels in the South of England.
So, when planning a holiday - something to look forward to all year - go for Scotland! Beautiful picturesque environment, welcoming locals, peace and tranquility guaranteed. And, to crown your experience, stop by HENRYS BAY in Stranraer! I promise, you won't regret! I've seen much of the world during my lifetime, stopped at many restaurants, but let me tell you: Scotland definitely is God's country. Enjoy and Bon Appetit!
