When I started to write “Hexe”, I never thought I was going to publish the book. I write for myself. I write on subjects which I have experienced in my own life. I write about people enduring hardships of different kinds during extraordinary times of their life. As I grew up with only my grandmother and mother after the second World War, of course, I have always been interested in how everyday life affects woman in different societies during difficult political situations. Men are making headlines, history. Men decide, act and hold key positions in societies around the world, more or less regardless of their abilities. The majority of women around the globe still are merely enduring and making the best out of given situations. Women are in the background, often regardless of their abilities. I refuse to acknowledge the superficially conceded positions they have achieved over times, because I am convinced of the suffering behind the struggle to hold these positions in a world dominated by men. The sacrifices made by women over centuries to contribute to change things in this world for the better are overwhelming. Midwives, healers, mothers, lovers, daughters, politicians, writers – we women have something in common: Our cultures, Christianity, Judaism, Islam – only a few major ones – have made us submissive, feeling worthless unless attached to a man. I write to help destroy these chains; I write to connect with my sisters and fellow humans around the globe. I write to find our roots behind this farce of a human society where everything seems to have gone wrong. I know we cannot re-write history, but we can look for different directions to find new ways of life. We can guide each other; books, written words. Messages from generation to generation of women. Let us break the rules of a world dominated by men, by slavery, violence and hatred. I want to pick up and continue the route we were forced to leave hundreds of years ago. And, don’t get me wrong. There is no creation of an enemy in the form of man. But, and I emphasize, there are new paths to follow to make this world a better one.
